ATTENDEES

Robert Goo, Anne Kitchell, Ann Hoffnar, Ed Murtagh

DISCUSSION

The major focus of the meeting was a report from Ann Kitchell about progress and plans for the technical survey of Sligo by the Center for Watershed Protection (CWP).

  • The Center has now received the grant money from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and will begin the survey this week. Anne and an engineer from CWP will look at Sligo Creek to target priority areas for stormwater retrofits. Anne brought maps with areas marked which, because of past experience, CWP believes warrant reviewing first. Anne will report to Ed on Saturday with information about their progress.
  • Anne brought a copy of the survey form they will use and a handout watershed groups can use to help decide what kind of retrofits to use at various sites.
  • CWP will have preliminary information for us soon and a packet of concepts by the end of the month.
  • The Montgomery County DEP has some grant money left in their stormwater outreach fund and has asked us to help select a site for a raingarden. We will use the preliminary information to give DEP a few suggested sites.

We briefly discussed the need to get more involved in the Prince Georges County section of Sligo Creek. Anne Kitchell suggests we get in touch with the Low Impact Development Center, a non-profit NGO working in Prince George County. They can help us make contacts. Robert agreed wholeheartedly and gave us the name and telephone number of a contact person: Neil Weinstein 301 982 5559.

Anne also reported that Andrew Frank of Park and Planning says the Commission is very interested in putting a retention pond at a site at the Takoma Park Middle School. If records from past surveys cannot be found, Frank says they are willing to re-survey to get information necessary to develop plans for the pond.
